1. Preoperative Evaluation & Counseling
Initial Assessment: Online telemedicine consultation (Zoom, Viber, WhatsApp) for patient history review, medical condition assessment, and personalized surgical recommendation based on individual profile and dietary habits.
Multidisciplinary Team: Includes a dietitian, anesthesiologist, and specialized nurse to ensure safe and effective preoperative preparation.
Surgical Options Overview: Explanation of available surgical procedures (e.g., sleeve gastrectomy, bypass) with expected outcomes and potential risks.
2. Diagnostic Testing
Required laboratory, imaging, and endoscopic tests (e.g., bloodwork, ultrasound, gastroscopy) to assess surgical readiness. Medication is prescribed where needed (e.g., for H. pylori eradication). Tests can be performed before travel or scheduled upon arrival, provided the patient is in Greece at least one week before surgery.
3. Surgical Procedure: Sleeve Gastrectomy
Performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia using 4–5 small incisions (5–15 mm). Up to 85% of the stomach is removed to reduce capacity and hunger by eliminating the ghrelin-producing fundus.
- Procedure duration: approx. 1.5 hours. Hospital stay: 1–2 days. Early mobilization and liquid intake begin on the same day. Return to normal activities in approx. 14 days.
- Postoperative Support: Continuous follow-up ensures success. No daily supplements unless blood tests suggest otherwise.
About the Surgeon: Dr. Zoi Vrakopoulou-Vrettakou is a certified General Surgeon with extensive training and specialization in Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery in Europe (Germany, UK) and Asia (Hong Kong).
