MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE

AN ANCIENT HEALING SYSTEM IN THE SERVICE OF MODERN MEDICINE

Acupuncture is one of the most ancient healing techniques used on the planet earth and its birth place is China. Already since 2600 BC, the basic theories on which acupuncture is based have been recorded, as well as the points of acupuncture, the type of needles and their use. The unaltered course of this therapeutic system over the centuries, as well as the complicated and comprehensive reports for specific diseases, contributed to its spread in the west.

More and more often, acupuncture is reflected in the developed western societies, not only in the sufferers but also in the circles of the scientific community. 64% of the US Medical Universities(Cornell, John Hopkins, UCLA, Maryland) include acupuncture in their educational program. In the UK acupuncture services are provided at the 34% of the Medical Centers, at the 84% of the chronic pain practice offices and at the 40% of general practitioners. Similar percentages are calculated in Germany, Italy, Austria, Norway, Sweden. Following a national survey conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine(1993) which found that the 34% of Americans have successfully achieved at least one unconventional treatment, it was suggested that these treatments, with predominant the acupuncture, should not be considered as “alternative medicine” but as complementary medicine. The National Health Council of the United States of America, based on 5000 medical researches related to acupuncture with the help of neurophysiology and neuropharmacology, made the recording of the preconditions for practicing acupuncture in medicine(indication, contradictions, possible side-effects) as well as in the promotion of research on acupuncture.
